Occam's Razor. When faced with competing hypotheses, select the one that makes the fewest assumptions. Do not multiply necessities without good reason. In layman's terms: the simplest solution is the correct one. The problem here is that people are over thinking it because the answer is right in front of you. The number does not matter as long as it is said in a complete sentence with the word stars. The objects are meant to distract you from seeing the pattern. In other words the answer is there are X stars where X is any number. Twilight is wrong because she is only saying numbers and not full sentences unlike RD and Pinkie. So the answer to Pinkie's question is there are 42 stars tonight.

Based on the fact that pinky said " do you want to play a mind game" I think that the number doesn't mater, but have to be said in a sertain way. So the answer must be there are 42 stars in the night sky.

18 if you don't include her hair and head blocking the way
5 when she asks for us to look at dashie's mane
10 when she puts dashie down and asks the question
70 at the "there is a correct answer"

the 3.14 stars is from a star near the top being slightly off screen and one behind her mane
the orion scope didn't have any stars in the background

The ones i didn't understand was
420 stars (because i didn't want to bother counting)
80 because i didn't know which frame of reference to use
and 314909.572059 as again i didn't want to count/ didn't know which frame of reference.

If i went with the assumption you counted certain colored stars as bonus points they seem a tad more possible but quite frankly I cant figure them out.

Answer: you can't know. All of your information is old. We can tell you with certainty how many stars there were eight minutes ago (0, it's NIGHT), how many there were 10 years ago (between 4 and 8 depending upon latitude, longitude and date), etc. etc.

Light speed being non-infinite is a bitch, ain't it? And just what exactly DOES "simultaneous" mean when information propagates at a finite rate?

How many stars? Why does it even matter, if you can see them but in reality they are so far away that they have actually been long gone for billions of years? If a star is a million light years away from the earth and just went super nova it would take a million years for that image to actually reach the earth and enter your vision. Stars, life in other solar systems? none of it matters cause if we actually found anything out there it would already be gone before we could even get close enough to study it. So your answer pinky pie? 0, because there is a possibility that there could actually be nothing there.

  • William Rosser (UggxdTyn5BdX0HgCoAEC)

There is no such thing as the night. All stars are suns, and suns only have days. Night is when you cannot see a sun, but since all stars are suns, and you can always see suns no matter which way you look in space, it can never be night. In fact, if all the light from all the stars in space were to reach us at the same time (meaning that there's the same travel time regardless of distance) and none of it were affected by the Doppler effect, the sky would be perpetually sun-yellow.

My answer to the riddle is: "There are 99! stars in the sky tonight." That reads ninety-nine-factorial.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with the way Pinkie is wording the question, because of the weird ways that she is asking each one. It MIGHT have to do with the object, but possibly the number of letters, which letters, or in what order they are in. Due to the large range of answer types ("absolutely none", "pi", "something times 10 to the nth power", "420"), I'm going to assume it's a combination of the two... Could we get ONE more example?

  • VuldEdone (Ugg1pNk57MG5-XgCoAEC)

I think it's a "Petal around the rose" puzzle. If so, the answer is in the title.

In the case of a "Petal around the rose", people roll dices. The center dot on a dice represents the rose, points around that dot represent the petals. The question is, "how many petals are there".
If it's really the same game going on here, then the object should "represent" the sky. Once you know the property that represents the stars, you should be able to tell how many "stars" there are for any given object.

May be that, maybe not. Dunno', good luck to those who want to try the math.

It has to be simple, and the actual number given is arbitrary. I noticed the following patterns:

    Here are the wrong answers:
    "Four hundred and twenty?"
    "Seventeen?"
    "Ninety-five?"
    "Eight!"
    "Sixty-nine?"
"Two point seventy one times ten to the power of five!"

    Here are the right answers:
"There are four hundred and twenty stars."
    "There are eighty stars, tonight."
"There are three point one four one five nine two six five stars."
"What if I say there are one hundred and seventeen times ten to the power of three point forty-three stars?"
"I thought there were absolutely no stars tonight."

    Patterns:
    1. All right answers are complete sentences.
    2. All right answers have the word "stars" in the sentence.
    3. All wrong answers are just a number.

Wait... there's gotta be some catch.  Looking at an object for a certain amount of time could affect your vision, making things blurry or clearer depending on what you look at and for how long.  Given Pinkie only gives a few seconds for each, the number could vary.  However, it could be a trick question in that the number in question actually refers to how many stars are visible in the entire animation if the night sky used is the same throughout the entire short.

...Honestly I don't think I can figure it out, but I hope some pony can with my little ideas/hints.

  • Q2401 (Ugi3KvnuSgc9Q3gCoAEC)

Well, first thing to do is list out the questions and their answers:
Q1: Twilight! Look closely at this eyepiece. When looking into this object, you can deduce the number of stars in the night sky! How many?
A1: Silly Twilight, there are 420 stars!
Q2: This lantern! Look into it. Now by thinking about it, how many stars are there in the night sky?
A2: There are 80 stars tonight.
Q3: This flower! So, how many stars are there tonight?
    A3: There are (pi) stars!
Q4: Now look at the ground. So, how many stars are there in the night sky?
A4: What if I say there are 117*10^3.43 stars?
Q5: So by staring at the leg of this Orion Scope...so how many stars are the--
A5: There are absolutely no stars tonight.

Well, the first thing I notice is that Pinkie didn't get to finish asking the 5th one, so it's unlikely that the answer depends on the specific wording of the question.

It can't be based on something like "if such-and-such conditions, answer is greater than x" because that would require prior information.

The answer can't depend on any sort of pattern recognition, since Dash didn't hear any of the previous questions and still answered correctly.

The answer to 4 bugs me. That number is entirely too arbitrary to have anything to do with the ground. Perhaps it's something specific about the number, like what letter it starts with? So, e & f, l & e, f & t, g & o, l & z. Hmm. I don't see any connection...

Something regarding the number of letters in the object would be a bit unfair for a spoken riddle.

      Eyepiece, 420 (four-hundred & twenty).
      Lantern, 80 (eighty).
      Flower, pi.
Ground, 117*10^3.43 (one-hundred & seventeen times ten to the power of three point fourty-three).
Leg of Orion Scope, 0 (zero).
Again, answer 4. It's too complex to have depended on the word form of the number, for a riddle like this.

    "Looks like she lost it."
    "Good!"
Hmm. So it's 'good' that Twilight's having a mental breakdown? You'd think they'd be a bit more worried after Smarty Pants...
Anyway. Good that she's...what, exactly? Not thinking as much? Is this one of those riddles that's "supposed" to be "really obvious" if you "don't think about it"?

Ok. I'm reasonably confident that the answer doesn't have anything to do with the actual number. Does it depend on HOW you answer then?

    Erg.

Let's look at the wrong answers:
1: Pinkie, there's no way anypony could count the number of stars.
    2: 420?
    3: 17? 95??
    There weren't any for 4.
    5: 8! 69? 2.71*10^5?!
    I don't see anything...

Hrm. Let's see that last one:
"Now, take a look at Dashie's mane. So, how many stars are there tonight? Hmm?"

Wait a minute...why is "Correct Answer" in quotes? There's more than one, isn't there?

Grrrrrrrrr. I'll think about this, oh yes I will...

  • monterrang (UgjxgdqYNwjsXHgCoAEC)

  • awesometacular (UgiFf3byKv8up3gCoAEC)

    There are 28E2A stars tonight.

  • Screw Loose (UggrhMkgKZRsqngCoAEC)

I'll stick with "not over thinking too much".

A rainbow has 7 colours. And rainbows comes from a white light that gets refracted. And certain colours get reflected back since the object in question can't absorb the light. And the main light source that light up Equestria at night is from the Moon that reflects the Sun. In this case, Celestia's sun is considered a star.

    So my answer is 1.

"When you look at legs of the Orion scope"
It's because looking at the leg of the scope won't tell you anything about the stars unless you look through the scope itself. It's called Logic.

... As for the rest of Pinkie's question, I don't really have a clue.

  • Luxin Nocte (UgjKpT1tpbifHXgCoAEC)

    There are 235 stars.

  • Sparkledash1 (UggZ8gwVP8uXfHgCoAEC)

    Let me try it.
Let's start with the galaxies. There are, astronomers estimate, around 170 billion galaxies in the observable universe, stretching out over a radius of some 45.7 billion* light-years. Those galaxies vary in terms of the number of stars they contain, Universe Today notes: Some spiral galaxies have more than a trillion stars. Some giant elliptical galaxies have 100 trillion stars. There are also tiny dwarf galaxies—tiny being, obviously, a relative term here—that have a significantly fewer number of stars.
The Milky Way—our little corner of the observable universe—has, for its part, some 400 billion stars.
So! If we multiply the (estimated) average number of stars in each galaxy by the number of galaxies in the observable universe—and carry the billion, etc.—we get a rough estimate of ALL THE STARS we're capable of observing. There are roughly a septillion stars in the observable universe. That's 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars. Which is, for lack of a more fitting description ... a lot of stars.
So, then: Back to you, you tiny little pony, standing on the surface of your tiny little planet in your tiny little corner of the universe. How many of those septillion stars are actually visible to you? An extremely, yep, tiny little percentage. There are only about 5,000 stars visible to the naked, average, human eye, MinutePhysics points out. And, because the Earth itself gets in the way, you can only see about a half of those from where you stand.
Which means that, when you gaze into the heavens, full of wonderment and awe, you see around 2,500 stars scattering the sky. If you're lucky, that is, and the stars align.

Oh, and the video was also good. :P

  • LeoT (UgjbD0TL98kIF3gCoAEC)

    hm, so let me think
rainbowdash's main has 6 colors, separed on 2 groups: 6/2=3
    the illuminati triangle has 3 vertices and 1 eye. 1/3 = 0,333333
if you create a 3d vector with 0.3333 in the x axis, 3 in the y axis, and 6 in the z axis, and normalize the final vector, we have (0.0496292, 0.446663, 0.893325)
if we multiply the axis we get 0,01980280637851467.
so clearly, the result then is just multiply it by the number of Muhammad and the answer is -13.

I bet it doesn't matter what obgect Pinkie names in the beginning. It depends only on how she's asquing. And it somehow connected to the geometry, cose all ansers, in my opinion, are in degrees. (Pi, 420, 80...)
