Bourdain's travel shows were pretty good. I don't know if he's still doing the CNN one but it became less and less about where they were or any history of the place outside of bad shit happened here during XX now look at this bad ass video editing!

How the states got their shapes was pretty good. A lot of the first century of US politics was pretty touch and go and tons of religious and ethnic disputes manifested in various ways. I guess Vermont exists solely because neither New York or New Hampshire wanted to deal with the Quakers living in a disputed area and it ended up becoming another state. The border with Canada was supposed to only go up to a certain latitude. They sent surveyors up to build forts at the border, but the ones in Maine got paid 35-50% of their payment in booze and went way too far.
