When people say, "Humans have a need for religion," they're pretty much always actually saying, "Other humans have a need for doing what I tell them, even if it's arbitrary, irrational, and never serves their interests." Notice how rarely anyone says, "I personally have a need for religion," when they're writing apologia for religion in general. It's not because they don't bother writing it down. People who personally feel a need for religion are generally quite literate and will have written down the sentiment many times in their life. The thing is, only a few people ever feel any personal need for religion. It's not at all a universal human experience.
