I think we need a permanent base on Moon if we want to build better. Right now getting shit off ground is a major limit on how big and how fragile you're allowed to go. The Moon, on contrary, has no atmosphere and has much lower 2nd cosmic velocity (a measure of how strongly gravitationally bound you are on the surface), so there is no need for space probes to neatly fold into a rocket, and, if Moon has the resources needed to produce rocket fuel, also save on that.
Many say that isolation and low-g is a big issue, but the crew on ISS stays up in orbit for a couple of months already. Moon is much further, but probably better in those regards than Earth orbit.
