West Yorkshire specifically? Pakistanis are there today in such huge numbers mainly thanks to right-wing market fundamentalists in the 1960s and '70s, actively recruiting cheap foreign labour. The British governments of that time felt a deep connection with the Commonwealth and so had no problem with immigrants coming from Pakistan.

Inevitably, the families of the workers followed, and then White flight happened, which freed up more and more room for Pakistanis. That is why, in 2026, you have so many old market towns in the West Riding of Yorkshire full of people wearing hijabs and jubbas.

White people in West Yorkshire (and, to a lesser extent, York and the western parts of North Yorkshire) tend to be extremely left-wing, identity liberal, and pro-Muslim, especially women.

South Yorkshire has a similar Muslim demographic, but it's only really in places like Sheffield where they bend the knee to fundamentalist conservative Islam. White people in Rotherham, Doncaster, and Barnsley are much more 'identity English' and tend to be Reform UK supporters, which is something they share with their kin in East Yorkshire and coastal North Yorkshire.
