Water only spoils when things grow in it, time is not a factor. Your commercially packaged water will last years and only suffer a funny chemical taste from the plastic.
But as soon as water gets contaminated, it only lasts days, and treated water like from your tap will only last a week.

I would recommend aquatabs, because they don't weigh anything.
