I also think the change of definition caused lot of that.
Back in the day it was a very serious diagnosis. But then they started to move the goalpost, they came up with the idea that it is a spectrum and now literally anyone can be on it.
Plus the society got more interested in it, looking for the signs, and take kids to get diagnosis. Many whom people would have overlooked now taken to psychologist/psychiatrist/whatever. The one who searches the one who finds.
I'm not saying all increase can be traced back to this two reasons (definition change and screening), but they play major role in the increase.
