The dog motion when they lift one front paw is misunderstood. I'm pretty sure there is a name for it in English, here people say the dog gives you a high-five, it offers a handshake.
Actually the dog just signals that it wants to be petted. It mimes the hand motion of the human, they learnt by observation.
