It was mostly a thing from a time before Proton existed. I'm sure there's games out there that just don't wanna work with Proton too well. I know there's that database but I'm not really gonna crawl through it, it'd just have to be something I experience myself and then deal with it. I have checked for more popular runs and some of the more recent ones I've played and they all seem to do well which is good. And having a VM means needing more drive space and of course I didn't buy a 4tb nvme when prices were cheap when I could have because I don't stalk prices to see they'd get fucked up just like that.
Also I sometimes hear of games that don't want to run on a modern OS and need an old version of Windows or such, but that wouldn't really warrant GPU passthrough.
