Proton is just a wrapper for Wine such that it is trivial to use with Steam. But I get you.
Things really tend to just work though. Haven't run into games that didn't work yet.

Yeah, like Podracer and Theme Park World. They would only run on Windows 98, but does work with Wine just fine.
I'm merely trying to say that you shouldn't put your mind up to creating such a VM to resolve an issue that probably doesn't even exist
