Ok, that seems like a fair distinction to me. Like I said, this is something I am genuinely wondering about so I don't have a definition myself.
I believe the group he tried to get me to join is "Soka Gakkai". Not certain though, as I am just going off of things I remember him telling me and comparing that to what I could find online. Only thing I am certain of is that it was a sect of Nichiren Buddhism, of which there seem to be many.
