Meanwhile I finished the book. I think its main appeal is that the events also happen in the late 19th century, so the setting of the alien invasion is unusual for me. These clashes usually happen in our time (since these are written by our contemporaries), or in the distant future.
Beside this I can appreciate the visionary performance of Wells.
