I think teenagers are detached from reality.
Back in the "good old days" about hundred years ago and earlier kids grow into the reality of life. While they had time to be kids they were involved gradually into the life of the family, they gradually learned to handle responsibility. They had their parents, grandparents and any other older members of the family as an example in all kinds of situations. The whole adult life played in front of their eyes.
Now parents are working where they cannot see them, they spend only brief time together daily, grandparents live elsewhere or in nursing homes. The kids tucked into schools too long with other clueless kids then they go home and watch tv or hang out on the internet and get the examples from there. Usually the wrong examples.
And so on and so forth.
