There really isn't one, just say whichever sounds better. It feels to me, as a native Anglo-Saxi, that it's a nothern/southern divide that evolved into seperate words. Like how we pronounce scone, bath, grass and many other words very differently.

I personally would say further in every circumstance, farther is just the posh United Health CEO way of saying further.
