Not really that surprising. If someone's lungs are fucked enough to require mechanical assistance, it will be weeks or months before they can heal sufficiently to come off. That assumes that the virus doesn't do more damage, or that it can be treated effectively, and effective treatment would assume that hospitals were willing to use potentially useful medications rather than act like the virus hasn't resulted in multiple levels of government declaring states of emergency.
It's a mark of how worthless hospital administrators are that they have yet to embrace the liability immunity that is typically conferred in these situations to perform human trials on those who have very little chance of recovery. But everyone needs a job, even if that job is pointless, so we'll keep on adding more administrators
