Upvotes please. At least as an optional toggle or a board option.

If its made so you don't have to see it (so an on off check box at the bottom) then I think you get the best of both worlds. I wanna smash that mother fucking like button.

I think just giving people the option of using it if and only if they want to is better than a board toggle.

This is not the way imageboards are constructed. Imageboards are based on transience, on impermanence of discussions. So, instead of having a centralized threads, were voting and opinion poll would benefit, the decision is made my decentralization of threads.
On Reddit, for example, you generally have few threads, with many replies. This way to construct a discussion community really benefit from voting systems.
On imageboards, however, it does not, because instead of few threads with many replies, the opposite happens: if a thread becomes biased towards a specific subject inside the thread OP, some anon will "nuclearise" the subject into others (more specific) threads.
That's why imageboards don't have voting systems.
Someone should do a wikipedia page about this, so we don't need this discussion anymore...

I don't want the same implementation as reddit. I want it like this
>one like per ip on each post
>no dislikes
>votes don't actually do anything
If you leave it as a user toggle, users only have to use it if they enable it.

I've been meaning to add fake clientside upboats for like the last two April Fools Days but I kept forgetting until it was too late to implement it.

All you gotta do is take that dream and make it so everyone can see the upvotes. Only as a toggle though, off by default, so no one has to use it if their against it. Think of the glorious future odli.ITS A BRAVE NEW WORLD AHEAD OF US

odilitime or any adm reading: if you listen to these idiots you'll lose this site. I'm not from /pol/ or anything like that, but I know the basic of how this kind of communities work and I tell you, if you start upvote, you *will* lose this website.

If its a user toggle and off by default no one has to use it that doesn't want to. User options are good.

Anonymous 09/14/2017 (Thu) 01:20:18 [Preview] No. 7077 del
>User options are good.
I disagree in some levels (human-computer interaction research supports this, more options imply more probability of human error), but let's focus on voting system.

It does changes the behavior of the uses even if it's an option. If the vote become on default, then the point will be: will it be enabled (visible) or disabled by default?
Even if it's disable by default and as user choice to view it, a vote can became an reward (positive reinforcement, in Skinner's Behaviorism) and will facilitate creation of an authority figure.
To understand, take a look on Aristotle's division about arguments:
- Pathos: emotions
- Logos: reasoning
- Ethos: authority

On good discussions (where the truth is the only important matter), it's ideal to not have pathos and ethos, although we are humans and they will appear in forms of cognitive biases at some level. [the exception about pathos is where humor is allowed, or when rhetoric devices such as irony is used to express a thought].

The removal of "Ethos" is the fundamental point in imageboards. Without ethos, an identity, we are free to talk what we want, because we don't have a social pressure.
You see? That's the basis of our community. If you change that, you lose.
The votes create Ethos. Ethos creates identity. Identity creates social pressure. Social pressure is an inhibitory factor.
Therefore, you should not allow it.

Some introdutory material:

I don't want to sound pretentious, by the way. It's just my view on this. But, I'm pretty sure of what I'm saying, if this feature starts to be implemented on imageboards, they will be dead in some months.

I like how the old chanarchive.com had upvotes. I think that upvotes are good for a "featured threads" page in an archive. However if the thread is still live you should not allow a voting system to interfere.

Anonymous 11/09/2017 (Thu) 07:02:13 [Preview] No. 7543 del
If this thread was designed to trigger every imageboard user ever, job well done. If you're serious about this suggestion, remove yourself to facebook and livestream your suicide for us to laugh at.

What about: vote counter is invisible by default for everyone but poster and server.
Becomes visible after voting.
No hiding/deletion by default, only through user options like shitposting wordfilters.
Mitigates the situation where people start basing their around opinion of masses because others downboated, and vice versa.
