>A molecular neurobiologist less senior than Weissman and more vulnerable to retaliation at this stage of his career told me bluntly in a recent email that the billions spent on decades of Alzheimer’s research “wasn’t spent on funding a large basket of ideas and looking under every rock” because “NIH is in the habit of funding the same old tired ideas from the usual suspects.” The same scientist added that the National Alzheimer’s Plan is “run by the same group of NIH-connected people who have been running it (right off a cliff) for the last decade.” This neurobiologist, who did post-doctoral work at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Germany, also noted that the plan now limits “who can apply for grants to a ‘pre-screened pool’ of investigators.”
