Nope, not doing it "wrong". My debates are carefully managed. They often start Socratic, and as I said, they continue until the leftist has no choice but to ad hominem and block. But in the meantime their followers are seeing every Tweet. Sorry, going to go with my gut on this one. I do not think there is a "universally best" approach for any encounter, except those that the moment calls forth.
