House Homeland Security Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) said he hopes to broaden the focus of his committee’s work on terrorist content online following the deposition of 8chan owner Jim Watkins. (The fringe website hosted manifestos tied to a recent string of mass shootings.) While panel staff are still reviewing testimony from their recent closed-door Watkins session, Thompson said he expects the panel to expand its focus to other platforms, with the goal of eventually proposing reforms. “Ultimately we’re looking at some policy recommendations,” he told Cristiano. “There’ll probably be a couple more hearings around it. But we’ll broaden it and just start looking at everybody, the Facebooks of the world, Google, 8chan, 4chan.”
