You don't have to use Tor or vpn for Zeronet at all. Just like you didn't have to on 8ch and don't have to here. We are anonymous to each other, but admin can see IP. Neither 8ch nor here (or other regular chans like 2 or 4) aren't actually totally anonymous - just anonymous to other posters. Zeronet doesn't claim to be anonymous, nor was it built for that reason - it's not privacy-focused it's anti-censorship focused. But of course you can obviously use Tor and/or vpn to post here, there or anywhere.

The appeal of 08chan is that it is distributed, so is a good repository for info that /they/ would rather Memory Hole - as long as one anon is online, the info can be distributed to anyone else who gets online & looks at it

The hype that you will somehow be having illegal content (cp) on your computer just by being on Zeronet is utter bullshit fear-mongering. I've been on 4 & 8ch when the site was taken offline so admin could to db backup for LE, then put back online. You are NOT, repeat NOT hosting/downloading/seeding images from any other board on Zeronet, period.
There are really no other boards on any chan I look at besides Q related, therefore I am not exposed to anything on any other board. Same for Zeronet. Don't want to see gun stuff? Don't visit /k/ - easy peasy. PLUS unlike regular chans where you can filter only by UserID/tripcode/keyword and bots/faggots can easily get around that, on Zeronet you can totally [M]ute another user - you will NEVER see their posts. You can go further and blacklist them (users and other boards, for that matter). You can also preview & edit your posts, have a much longer character count for posts, which is handy.

But free will is the best, many of us are on both, and some only on 1 or the other. Nothing wrong with any of those options. Love free will. Love having options!

I am unclear as to how Q could post there - since the multi-salt tripcode thingie (especial to 8ch) is not in use there (CodeMonkey's sekrit sawss), but that also applies here on endchan as well.

We ALL want 8ch to come back, but in the meantime it seems good to have, as you said, redundancy & options.
