Supreme Court rules in favour of unsealing Sherman estate files
In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court of Canada has ruled in favour of unsealing the estate files of Barry and Honey Sherman.
The trustees and beneficiaries of the slain billionaire Toronto couple fought to keep the documents private.
In an unusual move, they argued their lives could be in danger because the Sherman's 2017 killing remains unsolved.
Their argument was challenged by investigative reporter Kevin Donovan from the Toronto Star, who argued the right to freedom of expression and freedom of the press were violated.
The high court says the trustees failed to demonstrate a serious risk, and the sealing orders should have never been in place.
