I've heard middle-earth was simply, the middle-age of the earth.

Like this 75,000 year cycle. Split into 3 x 25,000 year parts. If we are currently in the third portion now, and at the end, then why is it so odd that the "Middle-Age of the Earth" was indeed depicted at least partially in LOTR?

I contend that JRR Tolkien tried to dumb it down for people to make it more believable but that back in those days, fairies and whatnot were around as well.
