Person dead after shooting with federal officer inside Metro Center

WASHINGTON — Red Line trains are bypassing Metro Center after a federal officer shot a person dead on the metro platform.

According to a spokesperson with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), one person was killed in the shooting that happened at Metro Center. That person's identity has not yet been released.

WMATA claims the officer was taken to an area hospital with injuries. The extent of the officer's injuries is unknown at this time.

Red Line service is delayed through all downtown stations while trains are single-tracking due to police activity.

Orange, Silver and Blue Lines are operating as normal.

WMATA encourages riders to consider Metrobus routes on their website's trip planner.

Police have not released any information regarding the events that led up to the shooting at this time.

The shooting happened on the same night that President Biden is speaking at the National Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence at St. Marks Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill.
