- its use of the 737 (a half-century old design) in the MAX (Boeing was trying to play catchup with AirBus but didn't want to invest the money in a new design)
- merging of MacDonald-Douglas with Boeing (said to have brought execs from MD that were more cutthroat, which altered Boeing's engineer-oriented culture
- Boeing's financial problems made them sell off various divisions, so they lost a lot of tech expertise
- Worst of all, to deal with problems that came from using such an old design (where the engines were mounted much lower than those of modern airlines), they introduced an MCAS system capable of COMPLETELY IGNORING pilot input and STEEPLY PITCHING DOWN THE NOSE OF THE PLANE under certain conditions
- Boeing didn't really make pilots aware of this possibility, it wasn't in the flight manual, which is why Lion and Ethiopian flight slammed into the ground soon after takeoff several years ago
