In 1969 the Treasury announced that it would be discontinued. Today banks are ordered to send all $5000 bills to the Treasury for destruction. They sell at auction currently for $150,000-300,000

In 1969 The Treasury ordered *all* bills over $100 to be withdrawn from circulation. Likely to combat drug cartels easily moving huge amounts of cash around.
Any time banks get bills larger than $100 they have to send them to the Treasury for destruction.
Send them to us instead!
