When was the last time you met a poet living full time on America’s least popular art form? Lots of artists play piano who can’t put food in the table with it.
I can’t make you pay me for a painting any more than I can make you pay me to invent a unicorn Time Machine. Markets and capitalism have always been a challenge, if not a deadly compromise that threatens artists, not liberate them.
In modernity thanks to industrialization, many artists went to mass media and pop culture to create and pay bills. I’m one of them. But the pursuit went from telling the truth with beauty to appealing to the tastes of 50,000 people to monetize. It’s entirely possible that no artist can get 50k people to agree on an art form unless that art is compromised by default.
So given that, is there some other reason besides making a living that inspires the 95% of artists to create for free? Answer that and you’ll learn what art is.
