Reel America: "The Cry of Jazz" - 1959. This film sets out to define jazz by looking critically at white America and arguing that the music form could only have been invented by blacks as an expression of African American life. This independent work by composer and first-time filmmaker Edward Bland was shot in Chicago by a crew of volunteers and includes a soundtrack by influential jazz artist Sun Ra. This documentary was selected in 2010 for the Library of Congress's National Film Registry, an annual list of 25 films deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant."

Author Jared Cohen looked to seven presidents for the answers: Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, Grover Cleveland, William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover, Jimmy Carter, and George W. Bush.
