The shredded trees, most stripped bare by violent winds, stand as silent witnesses to the fragility of human and animal life. We mourn those who left us too soon, taken by storms that spare no one. Those of us who are first responders, we carry the weight of these moments—rushing to aid, to comfort, to do what we can in the face of nature's fury. Every second we spend with those in need, every small act of care, matters deeply, but there are times when not even the most skilled mind and trained hand can preserve life.
I have seen many vehicle, machinery, and farm accidents in my public safety career, but none of them match up to the terror often seen after tornado strikes.
To our community: please take these warnings seriously. A storm may seem like "just another night," but it can change everything in an instant. To our fellow responders, thank you for your tireless efforts in North Dakota this evening—your compassion shines through the chaos. Special thanks to the local fire department, telecommunications, and Cass County Sheriff's Office for their incredible and heartfelt work last night, and for reminding us that support and kindness can make all the difference.
Life is precious and fragile. Let's hold it close, honor those we've lost, and set out to do something incredible with the time we have left today.
