Among the Wildflowers @deaflibertarian - Years ago I met a little girl who wore bilateral hearing aids. She loved going to Orange Beach with her family. Her mother commented that she used to be so annoyed that her daughter would wear her expensive hearing aids to the shore (hearing aids cannot get wet or get sand in them!), and she would say, “But Mom, I love hearing the sounds of the ocean!”
She ended up getting surgery to get cochlear implants. She didn't want to wear them at the beach. I was trying to help them with auditory training so her brain would learn how to adapt. I wanted to help her make use of her new devices.
I asked her about it.
It’s not the same, Miss Judi. It’s like a fuzzy computer voice telling me it’s the ocean. It's not the same!
The surgery removed all of her residual hearing. (Now surgeons know how to retain it, through trial and error). A lot of people do not realize that cochlear implants do not restore hearing; the sounds are not the same as what hearing people hear.
When she took off her hearing aids, she still heard some things. Now when she takes off the cochlear implants, she hears nothing.
She no longer hears the ocean.
