The ATA, the association that represents the larger trucking fleets, used to be the most powerful voice in trucking. In recent years, they've lost influence due to the rise of the smallest carriers.
Since 2008, the smallest carriers have grown the total number of trucks by 245% (blue), while the largest carriers (1000+ trucks) have only grown total truck counts by 15%.
With the rise of freight brokerage and technologies that have eliminated barriers to entry, this trend should continue.
(This is also why the driver shortage narrative is so off. When we have an increase in freight demand, small carriers will cover it).
