Simon Ateba @simonateba - BREAKING: The Department of Homeland Security has just ended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for around 76,000 Honduran and Nicaraguan migrants living in the U.S., as part of the Trump administration’s push to ramp up deportations.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said TPS was never meant to be permanent and that conditions in Honduras and Nicaragua have improved since the disasters that led to the protections—Hurricane Mitch (1998) for Honduras and a 1999 disaster for Nicaragua.
The move affects 54,000 Hondurans and 22,000 Nicaraguans. Noem emphasized voluntary return and praised Honduras as a partner. The administration previously terminated TPS for Haiti and Venezuela, though the latter is currently blocked by a federal judge.
DHS says the decision helps restore “integrity” to the immigration system and keeps TPS consistent with its original intent.
