A while back ago, I broke the story about moped robbery crews in New York City—groups riding scooters through neighborhoods, robbing pedestrians of their phones, and later hacking into them for financial gain. That operation never stopped. It’s still active, still organized, and still dangerous.
I believe the recent shooting of a Border Patrol agent near the George Washington Bridge is directly tied to this ongoing crime wave. The agent was underneath the bridge with his girlfriend when suspects attempted to rob him. At some point during the confrontation, he pulled out his firearm and was shot in the face.
Not far from that location, around the same time, another person was robbed of their phone—suggesting this may have been part of a larger pattern of targeted attacks.
Some of these robbery crews are believed to have connections to the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TDA). This crew may be separate—or possibly tied to the same network. What’s more troubling is that several suspects arrested last year in similar crimes were either released shortly after or never served any real time.
The scooter robbery wave never went away. I believe these crews are still active, still coordinated, and what we’re seeing is organized crime operating openly on our streets.
