The men and women in uniform on the ground were seemingly superhuman and conducting operations with supernatural abilities. During the evacuation of Afghanistan in August 2021, primary military units such as the 82nd Airborne Division, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, 10th Mountain Division, and Special Operations Forces displayed extraordinary courage, heroism, and exemplary discipline. These units faced immense danger and chaos on the ground at Kabul Airport, working tirelessly to secure the perimeter, manage crowds, and facilitate the evacuation of tens of thousands of civilians, including U.S. citizens and Afghan allies. Despite the constant threat of violence, including the devastating Abbey Gate bombing, these service members conducted themselves with unwavering professionalism and selflessness, embodying the highest standards of military service and dedication to their mission. Their actions during this critical moment in history are a testament to their bravery and commitment to protecting lives in the most challenging of circumstances.
One such unit was the 83d Expeditonary Rescue Squadron (Pararescue). Conducting hostage rescue operations outside of the wire. Running and gunning face-to-face against the Taliban and ISIS-K.
These men didn’t sleep for weeks. These men did the unbelievable, impossible, and never received a moment of acknowledgment or recognition. These men were cut from a different cloth. Thinking back to the weeks, leaning up to the Abbey gate bombing if it wasn’t for the special operations forces, and the uniformed service members everyone on the ground would’ve died. We can’t thank them enough.
The personnel recovery task force is the only unit that was on the ground the entire time during the evacuation that did not receive the presidential unit citation …like our army and Marine Corps counterparts.
