Mason refused to ratify the Constitution unless it included explicit protections for individual freedoms. We owe him a great debt for the rights so many take for granted—or don’t even realize they have.
Here’s a short version of the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the Constitution:
1.Freedom of Speech, Religion, Press, Assembly, and Petition
2.Right to Bear Arms
3.No Quartering of Soldiers
4.Freedom from Unreasonable Searches and Seizures
5.Right to Due Process
6.Right to a Fair and Speedy Trial
7.Right to a Jury Trial in Civil Cases
8.No Cruel or Unusual Punishment
9.Rights Retained by the People
10.Powers Reserved to the States and the People
Compared to Mount Vernon, Monticello, and Montpellier, Gunston Hall receives far fewer visitors. But it is just as important to our nation’s founding. Be sure to add it to your itinerary when you visit this historic region.
