My mother shared her own experience of the military being vilified in the 1970s, only to be told it was "exaggerated." The New York Times article held up as proof that veterans weren’t spat on actually had 220 first-hand accounts, but dismissed all 220 as mythical.
And yet, this is the same newspaper that uncritically amplified a secondhand claim by a family being traumatized by an "OK" hand gesture.
