Defense Department Briefing on Taliban Takeover of Afghanistan
Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby and Army Major General Hank Taylor held a news conference on U.S. efforts to evacuate Americans and Afghans after the the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. They responded to questions about evacuation flights, the Kabul airport security perimeter, a recent warning the U.S. Embassy issued to U.S. citizens to not travel to the Kabul airport, and reports that the Afghan army had begun to rise up against the Taliban. Major General Taylor announced during his remarks that, since July, the U.S. military had evacuated approximately 22,000 people from Afghanistan, with 17,000 people since the start of the evacuation operation on August 14.
