In Nepal, a trend started, especially on TikTok and Instagram, where we exposed the luxurious lifestyles of “nepo kids” and compared them with the struggling lives of ordinary people, along with raising voices against corruption. To control this, the government tried to manipulate or remove the content by pressuring social media companies, but the companies refused. So, the government ended up banning social media altogether.
After that, we Gen Z youth in Nepal began peaceful protests, where even underage students joined in. The main purpose of our protest was to make sure it did not turn violent or ugly—we wanted it to remain peaceful so that no one would get harmed, especially since a big festival was approaching and we didn’t want anybody to lose their lives during such times. We even requested everyone to come in school uniforms so the demonstrations would stay safe and nonviolent.
But what happened was shocking. The government turned brutal and evil. They shot people in the head, hunted us down while we were running, and even fired bullets inside hospitals. That day, more than 20 officially registered deaths occurred. The whole nation was drowned in grief, knowing that innocent children had been killed.
From then, the protest was no longer just Gen Z’s—it became a nationwide uprising. The next day, the entire country fought back. Each and every Prime Minister’s house was set on fire, money was looted like in Money Heist, and we Gen Z used the One Piece flag as our symbol. The death toll kept rising, but eventually, the Prime Minister resigned, the police surrendered, and the army took over control.
Ministers were beaten by the people, and now even the Prime Minister is under army custody. He cannot escape the country, since we reported the violence to UNICEF and human rights organizations, and they banned him from flying abroad.
