United States Trade Representative @USTradeRep - I appreciate the immediate attention of the President and federal and local authorities to the tragedy that occurred today at the Grand Blanc, Michigan, congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. As a member of the Church, the outpouring of support and concern from those outside the LDS community is particularly meaningful. Although cynics may dismiss the efficacy of prayers raised to God in such times, the faithful know that spiritual solidarity is a great comfort.
The violence that targeted families at worship today is senseless and tragic, and my family and I join our prayers to the many others that have been offered. We also know from the Gospel of Jesus Christ that “unto them that mourn in Zion,” He will give “beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.” Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are no strangers to adversity, and I believe that even those affected by this event can seek the peace and comfort promised by the Savior.
