Environmental advocates John Muir and Robert Underwood Johnson pushed for national park status to protect the meadows around Yosemite from overgrazing by sheep. Their efforts resulted in the designation of over 1,500 square miles as Yosemite National Park, the third national park in the U.S. Federal jurisdiction eventually extended to Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove.
Today, Yosemite attracts over 3 million visitors each year, who come to explore its breathtaking features, including Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, El Capitan, and the giant sequoia groves.
