>>162127Senate Republicans @SenateGOP - Here's where things stand on government funding:
The majority of Senate Democrats have now blocked a clean, bipartisan bill to fund the government three times.
This bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives with bipartisan support several weeks ago, and three Democrats now support it in the U.S. Senate.
But the remaining Senate Democrats continue to block it. They say that their demands, if not agreed to, are worth keeping the entire American government shut down indefinitely. Their demands are many and include extremely partisan policy changes, like reversing large portions of the recently passed Working Families Tax Cut.
The bill they oppose is clean. It does not include any partisan policies or poison pills.
The most incredible part: many of the same Senate Democrats who are voting against the bill right now actually voted for nearly identical bills 13 times in the past 4 years—including as recently as March. In other words, Democrats have no legitimate reason to oppose this bill.
Regardless, Senate Democrats are now opposing the government funding they once supported.
In exchange for government funding, Senate Democrats are demanding $1.4T of partisan spending, including truly outrageous things like free healthcare for illegal aliens and sending billions of tax dollars overseas for climate change projects.
Democrats also want to eliminate a $50 billion rural hospital fund, which was included in the Working Families Tax Cut, simply because Republicans supported it.
Their funding asks are so outrageous that it’s called into question whether Democrat demands are actually serious, or if they are outrageous by design—specifically engineered to trigger a government shutdown.
But why would Democrats want a shutdown, especially considering the immense harm government shutdowns do to the entire country?
The answer is that Senator Chuck Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader who is leading the shutdown charge, is in deep political danger.
In March, Senator Schumer did the right thing and supported funding the government. But other Democrats in the Senate, House, and across the country were absolutely furious at him for doing so. They wanted a boycott of President Trump’s government. At the time, Senator Schumer did not give in to their short-sighted demands.
Ever since, radical Democrats have made Senator Schumer pay dearly for that decision.
This time, Senator Schumer made the political calculation to avoid the wrath of those radical activists and instead shut down the government—even if it harms the entire country in the process.
Democrats in general do not agree with him. In fact, according to a new New York Times poll, the majority of Schumer's own party does not support his decision to shut down the government.
