U.S. Naval Institute @NavalInstitute - After his Helldiver crashed in Japan in 1945, aircrewman Oliver Rasmussen managed to evade capture for two months. Part Chippewa, Rasmussen survived by living off the land and raiding farms at night to milk cows. He was still hiding on Hokkaido a month after the war because he did not know that Japan had surrendered.
