The remnants of Typhoon Halong caused catastrophic flooding and destruction in western Alaska over the weekend of October 12-13, 2025, resulting in at least one confirmed death, two people missing, and the displacement of over 1,400 residents across remote coastal communities like Kipnuk and Kwigillingok.
Homes were swept off their foundations or floated away, with residents reporting seeing up to 20 houses adrift in floodwaters, some still blinking with phone lights as they drifted.
Emergency response efforts, including rescues by the U.S. Coast Guard and Alaska National Guard, have been ongoing, with more than 30 people rescued and multiple shelters established for displaced families.
The storm brought hurricane-force winds and storm surges, with water levels exceeding 6 feet above normal high tides in some areas.
