Pelosi and then-Senate leader McConnell had to give the green light. McConnell's Sergeant at Arms deferred to Pelosi's because she is a little tyrant and all the men except Trump were scared of her. Trump already told the military they should be deploying the National Guard to keep what he knew would be a large crowd safe. They ignored him and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, probably at the urging of Pelosi, wrote a letter banning federal troops from entering the capital. Delusional Dems had convinced themselves that Trump wanted the military because he wanted to stage a coup - against himself? After J6, Pelosi militarized the capital.
