You can dig up a cellar to keep your stuff cool in case of an outage. If you can't get your power back within a day or 2 you can salt your beef and make it jerky, and bottle up your fruit in air-sealed jars of vinegar.

To stay warm you just need 2-3 layers of sleeping bags and those mylar sheets to insulate your walls, floors, ceilings in your sleeping area.

I slept outside in a tent for 2 years so I doubt you'd die even harsh winters with a good setup.
