Dr. Avi Loeb believes the upcoming alignment of the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS on October 21, 2025, may be more than a coincidence. As it moves directly behind the Sun, it will disappear from Earth’s telescopes just eight days before reaching its closest approach.
Loeb suggests this could be the perfect setup for an Oberth maneuver — a powerful acceleration technique used by spacecraft near massive bodies like the Sun to gain speed.
At perihelion on October 29, 3I/ATLAS will be exposed to more than 33 gigawatts of solar energy, nearly a third of the total output of all U.S. nuclear power plants. If it is an artificial craft or mothership, Loeb argues, that energy could be harnessed to power advanced systems — all while remaining hidden from our view.
If the object behaves purely according to gravity, it will confirm a natural origin. But any unexplained acceleration or change in trajectory, Loeb warns, “would signal something far more profound.”
