Columbia Professor Mahmood Mamdani: “We need to recognize the suicide bomber, first and foremost, as a category of soldier. Does not the suicide bomber join both aspects of our humanity, particularly as it has been fashioned by political modernity, in that we are willing to subordinate life—both our own and that of others—to objectives we consider higher than life? Suicide bombing needs to be understood as a feature of modern political violence rather than stigmatized as a mark of barbarism.“
https://x.com/DrewPavlou/status/1982244264513089986Dr Jay Bhattacharya @DrJBhattacharya - The @Stanford faculty senate shamed itself when it declared @ScottAtlas_IT's anti-lockdown, anti-school closure views "anathema" in 2020. Dr. Scott Atlas was right, and the faculty senate wrong.
On Thursday, the faculty senate voted to restrain itself from rebuking individual faculty members in the future. This vote represents an implied rebuke of its own 2020 action and is a step forward.
Top universities like Stanford are starting to relearn why institutional neutrality is wise and absolutely necessary for academic freedom to thrive. That's good.
But to make things right, the Stanford faculty senate should officially rescind its rebuke of Dr. Atlas and issue him a sincere apology.
