>>168200EWTN News Nightly @EWTNNewsNightly - This month, three queens have gotten to meet with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican. Both Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom and Queen Rania of Jordan followed protocol and wore black garments to meet the Holy Father. So, why did Queen Mathilde of Belgium wear white at her audience with Pope Leo?
Queen Mathilde of Belgium attended an audience with Pope Leo XIV earlier this week wearing a white suit and mantilla, a privilege reserved for certain European monarchies.
King Philippe of Belgium, who holds the title “Rex Catholicissimus,” or “(Most) Catholic Majesty", was received by Pope Leo XIV together with Queen Mathilde this past Monday at the Vatican.
It is uncommon to see a woman dressed in white at an official audience in the Vatican. According to protocol, women must appear in strict black attire, with no neckline, long sleeves, and a skirt or dress falling below the knee.
Traditionally, a black veil or mantilla was also required, although this custom has gradually declined over time.
Only a few women in the world enjoy the so-called Privilège du blanc (the privilege of white), an ancient papal distinction granted exclusively to royal houses that have remained faithful to the Catholic Church.
This custom was established in the early 20th century and symbolizes purity and fidelity to the Catholic faith. Although queens may dress in white during audiences or ceremonies with the Holy Father, it is not permitted at funerals.
Currently, this privilege is enjoyed only by Queen Letizia of Spain; Queens Paola and Mathilde of Belgium; Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg; Princess Charlene of Monaco; and the ladies of the House of Savoy.
