HHS Rapid Response @HHSResponse - If Senate Democrats love the CDC so much, why are they crippling it right now?
Quote
Deputy Secretary Jim O'Neill @HHS_Jim
The Democrat shutdown has affected or interrupted several important CDC functions:
Forecasting and Modeling
•CDC’s website cannot be updated with real-time information and is no longer publishing weekly updates of respiratory virus data. Forecasts and estimates of disease transmission rates will be delayed. As a result, members of the public no longer have access to timely information to protect their communities and themselves.
•MMWR is unable to disseminate useful public health information and recommendations.
•Except for emergency responses such as measles and Ebola and immediate respiratory virus monitoring, all efforts to develop new infectious disease forecasting and modeling tools have paused.
Technical Assistance
•State requests to CDC for technical assistance cannot be met: we are unable to deploy disease detectives in their regular functions.
•19 planned Federal Select Agent Program inspections have been canceled.
•Support to states for newborn screenings has been paused.
•There will be limited support to states for lead contamination.
Other Activities
•Key suicide prevention programs have been suspended, including programs for at-risk groups such as youth and veterans.
•Overdose prevention, outreach, and response efforts have been affected. Drug overdose is the leading cause of death of people under 45.
