Hackman served from 1947-1952 as a radio operator and broadcast journalist stationed in China, Japan and Hawaii, helping to destroy Japanese military equipment to keep it from being used by communist forces.
After leaving the Marines, Hackman used his GI Bill benefits to enroll in the University of Illinois to study journalism and television production, before heading to Hollywood to begin his career.
