It’s a slog, no matter which route you take. Training, experience, real life lessons, training, experience, real life lessons. Ground hog day.
Military guys go through a year plus gauntlet of ground school, simulators, and multiple flights every day. And everything is graded. It’s intense. My Air Force class washed out 50% over the year. It’s not for everybody.
Civilian guys do it differently. They pay, or finance, years of pilot training and then toil flying for the regionals and getting the hours. It’s all about hours. And they are good. Equally good.
Flying militarily or commercially is a grind. Every flight involves risk, the lives of others, the stresses of busy airspace, bad weather, FAA issues, mechanicals, and life. Getting shot at in combat or having a passenger dying on your Delta flight are real.
That being said…my 35 years of piloting militarily and commercially for this nation was an absolute blessing. It was never work, even in combat, it was a privilege.
Thank you, America. Now, thank your flight crew, and advocate for Democrats to reopen the government ASAP! We need it, our pilots need it, and the FAA needs it!
Fly safe.
